Hidden Gems of Kalk Bay: Cafés, Wanders, Swims and Shops

Kalk Bay might be on every Cape Town local’s list of favourites, but it still holds secrets worth discovering. Whether you’re hopping off the train, wandering the working harbour, or sipping coffee by the sea, this seaside village blends old-school charm with modern-day magic. It is still one of my favourite places to visit, and it is a quick 40-minute drive from Cape Town.

Here’s how to explore Kalk Bay slowly and soulfully, cafés, shops, and coffee of course.

1. Arrive by train

For the full experience, catch the train from Cape Town to Kalk Bay. The scenic route runs right along the coastline between Muizenberg and Simon’s Town, with the ocean metres away from your window. It’s one of the most beautiful train rides in South Africa and drops you off right in the heart of Kalk Bay.

2. Grab a coffee and wander

Start your morning at Olympia Café (an iconic place in Kalk Bay), known for its flaky croissants and local flavour. Or pop into Kalk Bay Espresso for a quick flat white before exploring the quirky Main Road lined with vintage stores, bookshops, and art galleries.

3. Explore the harbour and tidal pool

A short walk leads you to the Kalk Bay Harbour, still a working fishing harbour where boats unload their daily catch. Look out for seals sunning themselves on the docks and head to Kalky’s, the iconic fish-and-chips shack, for lunch with a view. No frills — just fresh fish, generous portions, and salty sea air.

For a swim, the Dalebrook Tidal Pool (just a 5-minute walk away) offers calm, clean water and a safe spot for a refreshing dip with mountain views behind you.

4. Shop and gallery-hop

Kalk Bay is a treasure trove for collectors, creatives and curious wanderers. Hunt for vinyl at The Echo, get lost in the shelves at Quagga Rare Books & Art, and browse local ceramics, paintings and sculpture at one of the many galleries dotted between antique stores and boutiques.

5. Drinks at the Brass Bell

End the day at The Brass Bell, a Cape Town classic perched on the rocks at the water’s edge. Whether you’re in for a casual sundowner or a late lunch, the views are unbeatable, with waves crashing right beneath your feet.

From train rides and tidal pools to bookstores and fish and chips, Kalk Bay is a coastal village full of hidden moments and laid-back charm. Slow down, look around, and you’ll discover a side of Cape Town that’s timeless, warm and refreshingly real.

Thanks for reading. Let’s explore together.
