One of the things I love about Cape Town is that there always seems to be something happening. No matter what time of year you visit, there is usually a race, festival, concert, market, food event or celebration taking place somewhere in the city or nearby Winelands.
While many visitors come for Table Mountain, the beaches and the wine farms, some of the most memorable experiences happen when you arrive during a major event. The atmosphere changes, the city becomes busier, and there is a real sense of excitement in the air.
If you’re planning a trip to Cape Town, these are some of the annual events worth adding to your calendar.
January
Cape Town Minstrel Carnival (Kaapse Klopse)
The new year begins with one of Cape Town’s most colourful traditions. Thousands of performers take to the streets in bright costumes, singing and dancing as part of a celebration that dates back generations.
Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts
Few things beat a summer evening at Kirstenbosch. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and enjoy live music beneath Table Mountain. Even many locals make this an annual tradition.
February
Investec Cape Town Art Fair
Art lovers from around the world gather in Cape Town for Africa’s largest contemporary art fair. Galleries, exhibitions and creative events take place throughout the city.
Harvest Season in the Winelands
February is one of the best times to visit the Cape Winelands. Vineyards are busy harvesting grapes and many estates offer special tastings and seasonal experiences.
March
Cape Town Cycle Tour
The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the world’s largest timed cycling events and attracts thousands of riders every year. The route takes cyclists around the Cape Peninsula, including the spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Even if you’re not taking part, it’s worth experiencing the atmosphere.
Cape Town Carnival
This was one of my highlights this year. I attended the Cape Town Carnival and had an absolute blast. The music, dancing, giant floats and incredible costumes created a fantastic atmosphere and showcased the diversity and creativity that make Cape Town such a unique city.
April
Two Oceans Marathon
Often called the World’s Most Beautiful Marathon, the Two Oceans Marathon attracts runners from across South Africa and around the globe.
While the Ultra Marathon gets much of the attention, there are also shorter race options, including the Half Marathon and trail runs, making the event more accessible to many more participants.
May
Sanlam Cape Town Marathon
One of Africa’s premier road races, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has become one of the city’s flagship sporting events.
Traditionally held in October, the marathon moved to May in 2026 as part of its journey towards becoming Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major.
The event includes various race distances, making it appealing to both elite athletes and everyday runners.
As someone who enjoys running, I usually choose the 10km events rather than the longer distances. It’s a great way to be part of the excitement while still enjoying the route and atmosphere.
June
Winter Wine Experiences
Winter is one of the most underrated times to visit the Winelands. Think fireplaces, red wine, hearty food and fewer crowds.
Many estates offer seasonal menus and special tasting experiences during the colder months.
July
Bastille Festival
Held annually in Franschhoek, the Bastille Festival celebrates the town’s French heritage with wine, food, entertainment and plenty of festivities.
School Holiday Activities
July is packed with family-friendly events, exhibitions, and indoor attractions, making it a popular time for local families.
August
Women’s Day Events
From wellness retreats and networking events to markets and community gatherings, Cape Town hosts a wide variety of events celebrating Women’s Day.
Wildflower Season
The arrival of spring flowers transforms parts of the Western Cape and attracts visitors from around the country. The West Coast and Namaqualand are particularly popular during this period.
September
Heritage Day and National Braai Day
Heritage Day is one of South Africa’s most-loved public holidays and a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture, food, and community events.
Spring Festivals
As the weather improves, outdoor festivals, markets and garden events begin appearing across the city.
October
Rocking the Daisies
One of South Africa’s best-known music festivals, Rocking the Daisies attracts major local and international artists and has become a bucket-list event for many music lovers.
Spring Events and Outdoor Activities
October is one of the best months to enjoy Cape Town’s outdoor lifestyle before the peak summer crowds arrive.

November
HSBC SVNS Cape Town
The Cape Town leg of the international rugby sevens series brings world-class rugby and a festival atmosphere to the city.
Even those who aren’t rugby fans often enjoy the entertainment and energy surrounding the event.
Festive Markets
As the holiday season approaches, Christmas markets begin popping up throughout Cape Town and the Winelands.
December
Festive Lights Switch-On
One of Cape Town’s most anticipated annual events, the Festive Lights Switch-On officially kicks off the holiday season in the city centre.
Summer Concerts and Outdoor Events
December is packed with concerts, outdoor cinemas, beach events and live entertainment across the city.
New Year’s Eve Celebrations
From rooftop venues and wine estates to the V&A Waterfront and Camps Bay, there are countless ways to welcome the new year in Cape Town.
Other Events Worth Watching
There are also several events that don’t always fit neatly into one month but are worth keeping on your radar:
- Ultra-Trail Cape Town
- Ocean Racing Series
- Cape Town Triathlon
- Cape Town Festival of Beer
- Galileo Open Air Cinema
- Various food and wine festivals throughout the year
Why Events Add Something Special to a Cape Town Visit
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that events give you a different perspective on the city. Whether it’s standing on the side of the road cheering on runners, watching thousands of cyclists tackle Chapman’s Peak, enjoying a concert at Kirstenbosch or spending an afternoon at a food festival, you experience Cape Town alongside the people who live here.
For visitors, that’s often when the city feels most authentic.
Before booking your trip, it’s worth checking what events coincide with your stay. You might find that a marathon, carnival, concert or festival becomes one of the highlights of your Cape Town experience.
